Connecting to the Wireless Network in the Regent-Carey Library

These instructions are specifically for the Linksys WPC11 card on Windows XP but you can follow them as a guide to setup other cards on Windows 98/Me/2000. The most important step is to disable all network services except TCP/IP. Doing this will speed up your connection (and that of other users on the network).

Follow the setup instructions that came with your wireless card. Once the hardwire and drivers have been successfully installed, do the following:

  1. Click on Start, then click on Control Panel
  2. Pick a Category: select Network and Internet Connections

  3. Pick a Control Panel icon: select Network Connections

  4. Double-click on Wireless Network Connection

  5. In the Wireless Network Connection Status window, click on Properties.

  6. In the Wireless Network Connection Properties window, in the box: This connection uses the following items, uncheck all the options except Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click OK.

  7. Close all the previous windows. The wireless card will try to connect to the network automatically. If you see the following window,

    • under Available wireless networks: select regent
    • check the box which says: Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network, even though it is not secure
    • click Connect

You should now be connected to the Regent College Wireless Network!

Problems?

If you still have trouble connecting, double check that you have disabled all protocols except TCP/IP on your wireless card. Next check to see if you have Network Bridging enabled on you wireless card. If you do, disable it. Sometimes XP enables it automatically. All it does is to bridge the various connections on your computer (modem, network, wireless, firewire, USB, etc.) so that they can communicate with each other.
